CH-53 NVIS Modification

CH-53 NVIS Modification

This contract was awarded to Apache through a Special Operations Forces prime contract with Raytheon.  The program required the NVIS modification of 100% of the lighting devices found on both the CH-53D and CH-53E.  Apache was required to manufacture the required parts from drawings generated by NADEP.  Apache delivered over 250 kits consisting of 236 part numbers each.  Apache manufactured over 72,000 parts in support of this program.

Satisfaction of the requirements of this program was complicated by the poor condition of the NADEP drawing package.  Apache’s internal contract review procedures provide for the performance of an engineering design review immediately after contract award.  This review identified over forty defects with the government’s drawing package.  In a matter of weeks, Apache’s engineering department developed the necessary design changes.  These changes were promptly incorporated into our contract without any adverse impact to original program schedules.

The existence of a strong engineering department was essential to the success of this program.  Our review procedures and program planning was instrumental in the early detection and resolution of the drawing problems.  An optimum recovery plan was implemented which allowed Apache to meet the government’s accelerated delivery requirements, despite the unexpected delays.
